May Update

Iowa Eagles

Wow!  Have you checked on the baby Eagles recently?  They are huge . . . http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles

Math

We have started unit 8 – Fractions.  The first few lessons were spent reviewing fractions and important vocabulary (equal, whole, numerator, denominator, and equivalent fractions).  In class we have been building and creating with fractions.  Recently the students created their own underwater scene that was full of fractions!

Science

Recently we have been learning about bird migration.  The students enjoyed looking at books on the subject and reporting to me their observations from home.  We have also been exploring simple machines and inventions.  The students have had fun exploring simple machines using a new iPad app – TinkerBox HD.  We have also been tinkering with physics using an iPad app called SimplePhysics.  Students build on their knowledge of physics as they build more complex structures.

Reading and Writing and Grammar

We recently completed our class novel - The World According to Humphrey.  Students wrote a book report for the novel.  The final product was a sandwich!  Look for this to come home soon.  I have also been taking some time to share with students some well know book series in the hopes it might inspire more reading: Series of Unfortunate Events, My Side of the Mountain series, and Judy Blume’s Fudge series.

Last week we wrote a letter to the President of the United States.  Some students even wrote their letter in cursive!  We are hoping we hear back from the White House.

Art

Last week we learned about the famous Norwegian artist Edvard Munch and his painting, The Scream!  Students were amazed to learn that one sold at an auction for $119 million on Thursday.  I also told them about the two times versions had been stolen from Norwegian museums.  We concluded the lesson by recreating The Scream using crayons – the results were stunning!

Welcome to April!

Iowa Eagles

Our class has been enjoying watching the Iowa Eagle Cam during our Snack Break and at the end of the day.  The live camera is set up 80 feet in a cottonwood tree near Decorah, Iowa.  It keeps eye on an Eagle nest.  The nesting Eagles have three eaglets . . . http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles

Math

We have started Unit 6 – Geometry.  Students now have the Unit 6 parent letter and Home Links in their Wolf Binders.  The parent letter has some great ideas on how to support Geometry at home – check it out.  Please help your child when Home Links are assigned.

Students should still be practicing their multiplication facts at home!  Last week I sent home a “dot game” for practice.  We also occasionally watch School House Rock – Multiplication . . . perhaps your child could sing you a song!

Reading and Writing and Grammar

Our new story this week in reading is One Riddle, One Answer.  On Thursday of this week (April 5th) students will be tested on plot and setting, present-tense verbs, using a dictionary, and metaphors.  Thank you parents for listening to your child read the reading bookmark books aloud and discussing the questions with them at the back of the book!  The new forms have a spot for students to write their answers.  Please check to see that your child is writing complete sentences and using details from the story to answer the questions!

Art

The Art Fair will be happening at BHE on April 4th.  Each student has selected one piece of art, that we created in class, to put on display.  The pieces look amazing – great job students!

Field Trip

Our class will be going to the Historic Cahill School on Tuesday, April 3rd.  Please help your child to dress as if they were a pioneer.  Their lunch should also be similar to what a pioneer might eat. Students have brought home lists provided by the Historic Cahill School.
